Shipyards and Mesothelioma

Are you looking for information about the Brooklyn Navy Yard, or about other Navy shipyards because you or a loved one worked at one of these shipyards?  Thousands of men and women worked at these shipyards during the 20th century and were exposed to asbestos, a dangerous carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) known to cause serious asbestos diseases such as mesothelioma cancer, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Beginning in the 1930s and continuing through the mid-1970s, the U.S. Navy used asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in a number of applications on the ships in the Navy fleet.  Asbestos was also used in the buildings constructed at these shipyard sites.

The men and women who worked at the shipyards, as well as the Navy personnel who served on the ships built at the yards, were all exposed to the dangerous substance, putting them at risk for asbestos disease.

Asbestos was found in many materials made in shipyards, including bulkhead and pipe insulation, brake linings, floor tiles and panel sheeting.   Asbestos was used extensively in the engine room, causing laggers, boiler tenders, and virtually all Navy personnel working in or near the bilges to breathe in asbestos dust.

Shipyard workers routinely worked on many kinds of ships over the years, including new construction Navy aircraft carriers such as the USS America and USS Enterprise, cargo ships and other vessels.
