Asbestos at the Brooklyn Navy Yard

If you or a loved one worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and has been diagnosed with an asbestos disease, our lawyers may be able to help you file a lawsuit.  You can also obtain a free copy of our asbestos sourcebook by clicking here.

Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma cancer, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Since the Brooklyn Navy Yard first began to build ships powered by electricity, thousands of men and women who worked at the Yard were exposed to
asbestos on an almost daily daily basis.

Exposure to asbestos dust was caused by working with or near the hundreds of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and products that were used in the build, maintain and repair both Navy ships and the buildings at the Brooklyn Navy Yard site.

When Navy closed the yard in the late 1960s, the site was converted to private industry, leaving the employees of these companies at risk for disease when the old buildings were repaired or demolished.

As late as 2007, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) was still addressing the issue of asbestos contamination at the Yard when they issued Requests for Bids to perform asbestos abatement at six buildings at the Yard.
