From 1817 through 1966, nearly 100 ships were built and launched at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.  The thousands of dedicated men and women who worked at the Yard were all exposed to asbestos, a carcinogenic (cancer-causing) mineral.  Exposure to asbestos is a known cause of serious illnesses including mesothelioma cancer, asbestos-related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Asbestos was routinely used in the construction of the ships built at the yard, particularly in the engine room, the boiler room, and in powder rooms where gunpowder and explosives were stored onboard.  Many Navy veterans report that asbestos insulation would flake on their bunks.

In combat and training maneuvers, vibrations from the guns and the launch of other weaponry would cause additional disturbance of asbestos insulation on pipes and other areas of the ship.
